What is a routine physical exam?
Also called Well visit or Physical, is a comprehensive preventative exam with your primary care provider. The purpose of this visit is to screen for diseases, assess the risk of future medical problems, encourage a healthy lifestyle, update vaccinations and maintain a relationship with a primary care provider (PCP). A PCP may be a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant.

The exam screens for diseases, assess the risk of future medical problems, encourages a healthy lifestyle, allows patients to update vaccinations status, and allows for a relationship with a primary care provider.
Preventive Care for CHILDREN (Newborn – 21 Years of age)
- Hearing. Screening is performed during the first month. Children will have a hearing test starting at 4 years old and every year after. Talk to your healthcare provider about hearing and language concerns.
- Vision. Screening with Snell charts starts at 3 yrs old but subjective vision screening checklists are done from newborn.
- Oral health. Your healthcare provider will check oral health from 6 months to 14 years of age. Ask your healthcare provider about fluoride supplementation.
- Lead screening. It is recommended that a lead blood test should be performed for children 1 and 2 years of age. This test screens for possible elevated lead levels.
- Hemoglobin screening. A blood hemoglobin test is done at 1 year of age to screen for anemia.
- Height, weight, and body mass index measurements. Your health care provider monitors height, weight, head circumference and body mass index (BMI) during every wellness exam.
- Dyslipidemia screening. Between 9-11 years of age, a blood lipid test is done once to screen for dyslipidemia. A blood lipid test to screen for dyslipidemia is recommended for children 9-11 years old.
