What is a routine physical exam?
Also called Well visit or Physical, is a comprehensive preventative exam with your primary care provider. The purpose of this visit is to screen for diseases, assess the risk of future medical problems, encourage a healthy lifestyle, update vaccinations and maintain a relationship with a primary care provider (PCP). A PCP may be a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant.
Also called a well visit or physical, it’s a preventative exam that ensures that you stay in good health. The exam screens for diseases, assess the risk of future medical problems, encourages a healthy lifestyle, allows patients to update vaccinations status, and allows for a relationship with a primary care provider.
Preventive Care for CHILDREN (Newborn – 21 Years of age)
Hearing. Screening is performed during the first month. Children will have a hearing test starting at 4 years old and every year after. Talk to your healthcare provider about hearing and language concerns.
Vision. Screening with Snell charts starts at 3 yrs old but subjective vision screening checklists are done from newborn.
Oral health. Your healthcare provider will check oral health from 6 months to 14 years of age. Ask your healthcare provider about fluoride supplementation.
Lead screening. It is recommended that a lead blood test should be performed for children 1 and 2 years of age. This test screens for possible elevated lead levels.
Hemoglobin screening. A blood hemoglobin test is done at 1 year of age to screen for anemia.
Height, weight, and body mass index measurements. Your health care provider monitors height, weight, head circumference and body mass index (BMI) during every wellness exam.
Dyslipidemia screening. Between 9-11 years of age, a blood lipid test is done once to screen for dyslipidemia. A blood lipid test to screen for dyslipidemia is recommended for children 9-11 years old.
